1. Lead with love, not argument. Most Latter-day Saints are sincere, moral, family-oriented, and spiritually serious. If they sense contempt, they will likely stop listening. Real friendship opens doors that debates often close.
2. Focus on who Jesus is. Keep the center on the biblical Jesus, not just on problems in LDS history or doctrine. Many people begin to reconsider Mormonism when they see the difference between Jesus as enough and a system that adds requirements, ordinances, and institutional authority.
3. Share the gospel of grace. clearly Emphasize salvation by grace through faith in Christ, not by personal worthiness or religious performance. One major reason some leave Mormonism is that they become exhausted by striving and discover the freedom of the gospel.
4. Use the Bible carefully and respectfully. Don’t weaponize Scripture. Instead, open passages about grace, the finished work of Christ, assurance, and the nature of God. Many begin questioning LDS teaching when they compare it closely with the New Testament.
5. Ask thoughtful questions. Questions are often more effective than speeches. For example:
• How do you know when you’ve done enough?
• Is Jesus sufficient, or is something else required?
• Can a person have assurance of salvation now? Good questions help expose the difference between grace and a works-based system.
6. Talk about assurance and peace. Many former Latter-day Saints say they lacked real certainty before God. When they encounter the biblical message that Christ’s work is complete and sufficient, that becomes a turning point.
7. Gently address authority and revelation. A common reason people leave Mormonism is growing concern about whether LDS prophets, scriptures, and doctrines truly align with God’s unchanging truth. You do not need to be harsh — just show why final authority belongs to God’s Word and why truth must be tested.
8. Help them see the burden of performance-based religion. Some leave because Mormonism can feel like a constant cycle of measuring up: temple worthiness, callings, obedience, and expectations. Show them that the gospel is not try harder to become worthy, but Christ has done what we could never do.
9. Be prepared for a long journey. Leaving Mormonism is not just changing churches. It often means loss of community, family tension, identity crisis, and fear. Reaching LDS people for Christ requires patience, compassion, and ongoing support.
10. Invite them into real Christian community. Don’t just call them out of something; invite them into something. Many who leave need: sound Bible teaching, loving fellowship, room to ask questions, reassurance that grace is real. A healthy church can be a powerful witness to the sufficiency of Christ.
