The second Mormon “prophet,” Brigham Young, declared that God gave him a direct revelation that Adam was God! This doctrine was preached in Mormon temples for many years as part of their endowment ceremony.
Young also claimed that all his words should be considered scripture:
“I say now, when they are copied and approved by me they are as good Scripture as is couched in this Bible…”
— Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 264 (October 6, 1870)
“I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture. Let me have the privilege of correcting a sermon, and it is as good Scripture as is anything in the Bible.”
— Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 95 (February 8, 1870)
But the Mormon Church officially disavowed the Adam/God theory only as late as 1905 and only publicly denounced it in 1976.
Mormons are conditioned to trust their leaders and are promised that they will never lead them astray! Here are succeeding Mormon “prophets” and leaders echoing the same false doctrine:
Wilford Woodruff: Apostle/President (1807–1898) “Adam was Michael the archangel, and was the father of Jesus Christ in the flesh.” (Journal entry, May 14, 1876)
Lorenzo Snow: Apostle/President (1814–1901) “Adam being our father and God.” (1890’s statement)
Heber C. Kimball: Counselor in First Presidency (1801–1868) “Adam is our Father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do.” (Sermon, 1857)
John Taylor: President (1808–1887) “Adam is our Father and our God.” (Journal entry, 1852; sermon, 1870’s)
QUESTION FOR MORMONS: If you’ve been assured that your prophets and leaders will never lead you astray but are caught preaching false doctrine, how can you possibly trust them for the truth?
