Mormonism Is Damaging

Mormonism is spiritually damaging because it turns the relationship with God into a lifelong performance. Salvation and blessings are conditional on obedience, sacrifice, and endurance, meaning believers are never allowed to rest in grace. There’s always another commandment to keep, another standard to meet, and another way to fall short. This creates chronic guilt, anxiety and a sense of never being enough, even among the most devoted members.

The doctrine that salvation requires the “sacrifice of all things” removes any real assurance. If eternal life depends on whether you have sacrificed enough, obeyed faithfully enough or endured long enough, then peace with God is impossible. God becomes an evaluator rather than a Savior, and fear replaces trust. Many believers internalize failure as a personal moral defect rather than recognizing the Mormon system, itself, is designed to keep them incessantly striving.

Mormonism also damages believers by placing ultimate authority in living leaders rather than unchanging truth. Because prophets can override scripture and contradict past leaders, members are trained to suppress conscience and doubt in the name of obedience. Questioning becomes rebellion, and loyalty to the institution becomes inseparable from loyalty to God. This dynamic makes spiritual manipulation easier and leaving psychologically devastating.

The temple covenant intensifies this harm by binding members to give everything–time, talents, and possessions–to the Church for life. Salvation becomes tied to institutional allegiance, so leaving feels like betraying God and forfeiting eternity. This produces fear, shame and deep identity loss for those who struggle or step away.

In the end, Mormonism wounds believers because it replaces grace with performance, assurance with anxiety and freedom with obligation. It demands everything, promises peace later, and rarely allows rest now–as God promises.
