As for believers in the faith, Paul warned us about endless genealogies. This meaning that our time spent finding all we can about our ancestors of the past and even other families for church purposes is wrong. It is written, “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned.” (1 Timothy 1:1-5) These endless genealogies only lead to questions, which is not what God wants. Especially the kinds in the Mormon church, where they try all they can to find every death record and do baptisms and marriages for the dead for them. This is so wrong and should be stopped immediately. As a Mormon, you can be the first to do this in your family. Stand up for what you know is right in God.
Now, some people may ask the question, but what about keeping a genealogy of my family only? It isn’t endless, so it should be ok. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with that, right? Well, we can think it is harmless all we want, but the question begs, is it ok with God and what the Bible says? And unfortunately, the answer is yes, keeping a genealogy is wrong. We need to avoid this. To help you understand that I am not just making this up, we will learn some more from Paul, who said, “this is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.” (Titus 3:8,9) It can’t be more plain than this. We are to avoid foolish questions that arise from genealogies, as we read in 1 Timothy 1 and again in Titus 3. Now, to help clarify things, the need for genealogies ended with Jesus’s birth, now there is no more need to verify our lineage via a family tree. So what does this mean? It means that so-called churches that are based on genealogies are false, for if they were Christ’s church, they would avoid this.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that we will remember to keep Your laws and statues, no matter if they seem hard or not what we wish to do. As for me, my immediate family is very big into keeping genealogies, but I know in Your word that this practice is wrong. So how am I supposed to treat my family who continue in this practice that is false? I know that I need to treat them with respect, but I know also that I am supposed to help people understand Your truth. So I ask that I might do so in a way that is kind, loving, and respectful. Help me to be patient with them if the topic does come up and that my reason for saying it is wrong is based on Your Word, the Bible, and not my own opinion. What I think can get me into a lot of trouble, but if it comes from You, then the Holy Spirit will back me up. This I believe, Lord. You will always come through when I open my mouth to teach from the Bible. I trust in You, Jesus. You are the rock upon which I stand. Lead me in the ways of righteousness and help me to not go astray. Traditions can be good and all, but not if they go against what has been taught in the Bible. I’d rather follow You than anything else. I trust in You. I love You, Lord. Amen.
Please listen to Paul Gee on this? Endless genealogies are not God’s will and are not good. They ended with the Lord Jesus Christ and they were not endless in their day either
